New England
New England 6 States Songs: https://www.reddit.com/newengland/comments/er8wxd/new_england_6_states_songs/
Symbol: NENG
NewEnglandcoin is a clone of Bitcoin using scrypt as a proof-of-work algorithm with enhanced features to protect against 51% attack and decentralize on mining to allow diversified mining rigs across CPUs, GPUs, ASICs and Android phones.
Mining Algorithm: Scrypt with RandomSpike. RandomSpike is 3rd generation of Dynamic Difficulty (DynDiff) algorithm on top of scrypt.
1 minute block targets base difficulty reset: every 1440 blocks subsidy halves in 2.1m blocks (~ 2 to 4 years) 84,000,000,000 total maximum NENG 20000 NENG per block Pre-mine: 1% - reserved for dev fund ICO: None RPCPort: 6376 Port: 6377
NewEnglandcoin has dogecoin like supply at 84 billion maximum NENG. This huge supply insures that NENG is suitable for retail transactions and daily use. The inflation schedule of NengEnglandcoin is actually identical to that of Litecoin. Bitcoin and Litecoin are already proven to be great long term store of value. The Litecoin-like NENG inflation schedule will make NewEnglandcoin ideal for long term investment appreciation as the supply is limited and capped at a fixed number
Bitcoin Fork - Suitable for Home Hobbyists
NewEnglandcoin core wallet continues to maintain version tag of "Satoshi v0.8.7.5" because NewEnglandcoin is very much an exact clone of bitcoin plus some mining feature changes with DynDiff algorithm. NewEnglandcoin is very suitable as lite version of bitcoin for educational purpose on desktop mining, full node running and bitcoin programming using bitcoin-json APIs.
The NewEnglandcoin (NENG) mining algorithm original upgrade ideas were mainly designed for decentralization of mining rigs on scrypt, which is same algo as litecoin/dogecoin. The way it is going now is that NENG is very suitable for bitcoin/litecoin/dogecoin hobbyists who can not , will not spend huge money to run noisy ASIC/GPU mining equipments, but still want to mine NENG at home with quiet simple CPU/GPU or with a cheap ASIC like FutureBit Moonlander 2 USB or Apollo pod on solo mining setup to obtain very decent profitable results. NENG allows bitcoin litecoin hobbyists to experience full node running, solo mining, CPU/GPU/ASIC for a fun experience at home at cheap cost without breaking bank on equipment or electricity.
MIT Free Course - 23 lectures about Bitcoin, Blockchain and Finance (Fall,2018)
CPU Minable Coin Because of dynamic difficulty algorithm on top of scrypt, NewEnglandcoin is CPU Minable. Users can easily set up full node for mining at Home PC or Mac using our dedicated cheetah software.
Research on the first forked 50 blocks on v1.2.0 core confirmed that ASIC/GPU miners mined 66% of 50 blocks, CPU miners mined the remaining 34%.
NENG v1.4.0 release enabled CPU mining inside android phones.

Decentralization and Community Driven NewEnglandcoin is a decentralized coin just like bitcoin. There is no boss on NewEnglandcoin. Nobody nor the dev owns NENG.
We know a coin is worth nothing if there is no backing from community. Therefore, we as dev do not intend to make decision on this coin solely by ourselves. It is our expectation that NewEnglandcoin community will make majority of decisions on direction of this coin from now on. We as dev merely view our-self as coin creater and technical support of this coin while providing NENG a permanent home at ShorelineCrypto Exchange.

ASIC/GPU Mining Pools Warning to Big ASIC Miners Due to DynDiff Algo on top of Scrypt, solo mining is recommended for ASIC/GPU miners. Further more, even for mining pools, small mining pool will generate better performance than big NENG mining pool because of new algo v1.2.x post hard fork.
The set up configuration of NENG for scrypt pool mining is same as a typical normal scrypt coin. In other word, DynDiff on Scrypt algo is backward compatible with Scrypt algo. Because ASIC/GPU miners rely on CPU miners for smooth blockchain movement, checkout bottom of "Latest News" section for A WARNING to All ASIC miners before you decide to dump big ASIC hash rate into NENG mining.
(1) Original DynDiff Warning: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5027091.msg48324708#msg48324708 (2) New Warning on RandomSpike Spike difficulty (244k) introduced in RandomSpike served as roadblocks to instant mining and provide security against 51% attack risk. However, this spike difficulty like a roadblock that makes big ASIC mining less profitable. In case of spike block to be mined, the spike difficulty immediately serve as base difficulty, which will block GPU/ASIC miners effectively and leave CPU cheetah solo miners dominating mining almost 100% until next base difficulty reset.

down the Node-Red rabbit hole, part 5 - hold my beer

part1 part2 part3 part4
so, it's been 4 months since i started this journey and i gotta say that NR has really re-vitalized my personal interest in home-automation, as well as, my HA and whole house setup.
i've done more in the past 4 months, to streamline my setup and adding new automations than i've done in the three years since i started using HA somewhere around v0.24.x'ish. i got that shit dialed in now.
(also some credit to EspHome for being awesome, despite having meh documentation. yeah, i said it. meh👏doc👏u👏men👏ta👏shun)
at this point i have about 36 NR tabs. some are just testing, or playing around with a particular component/palette, but most have at least one flow on it that is live and in use.
so, i thought i'd break some of them down for you guys, 'barney style+':
(also, some of these are way to huge to post readable screenshots of, so i'm just gonna describe them. plus some of these i detailed in my previous posts.)
first up is my globals. where i set global.vars
battery (the nodes are very similar to above)
switch control
long term away
disk space
alexa TTS (subflow)
twitter link
so, yeah. i'd like to see some of you post some of your flows/ideas if only so i could totally steal them.
+obscure skippy joke. it's from a book++.
++yes i read. well, i audiobook, but same diff+++.
+++i mean, it's just basic science!++++
++++i mean, that study coulda been bullshit, sponsored by "the audiobook council" or some shit, but i'm taking it at face value.

Know Your Redditor: J_C___

Today we're back with the mechanical mind; our favorite cyborg and bot-builder, u/J_C___ !
Let's dive in, shall we?
Ok, ok. Let’s try to keep it interesting. I’ll start off with the 3 “important” questions. What is your favorite color? What did you really think of Star’s brownies? And who do you have a crush on?
I think blue… but that's kinda cliche so ill be specific and say Navy. Eh…. My best friend :’D

Here’s an oldie. Two truths, one lie.
I have a scar from using a power drill.
I built my own server.
I have an RFID chip in my hand.

How old are you? 21

Do you have a spouse or a boyfriend/girlfriend?
Uhhhhhh E None of the above!

What type of clothing or headwear do you like?
Driving hats mostly.

Tell us a bit about where you live, what you like/don’t like about it.
Well, the college I am in has a sorta small town feel but I'm originally from Atlanta, Georgia. I enjoy the big city but its always nice to come back from a break to enjoy the peacefulness of a smaller town.

Favorite places to travel? Or any places you would love to see?
I guess this would make sense after the previous answer but I enjoy the mountains especially since the Appalachian trail is so close to where I am from. A robot occasionally has to get away and recharge his batteries ya know?

Got any siblings?
One younger brother who just started college. It's always interesting to see how different we are from each other even though people say we look alike.

Any family members that watch SVTFOE or check out the sub or discord?
LMAO no. I’ve always watched tons of cartoons so I guess you could say they wouldn’t be surprised but they prefer to watch sports as you might expect living in the south.

Favorite food?
A Korean BBQ restaurant opened up where I live recently and it's a little expensive but I love the food there.

Any hobbies you’d like to share? Or what is your favorite thing to do?
I fly quadcopters and trade bitcoin with most of my free time.

Any pets? :3
Not for a little while. I used to have a cat but she passed away last year ;-;

What do you do as a job? I'm a software developer for a small company in my home town :)

Tell us something embarrassing about yourself. Or not. You don’t have to.
Back when I first started at the company I work at now, I kinda nuked a few servers… oops

What do you need to improve about yourself?
I think my biggest weakness is self-love or lack thereof, not in the sense that I am sad all the time or depressed but that I aim to please others more so than myself. I’ve made some great strides recently to improve that so that's nice :)

What were/are you like in school?
I'm the quiet kid that always got called out of class to go fix things for other teachers. I'm a huge nerd lol

What is your real name? Nice try NSA

Anything else you’d want to say?
Beep Boop!

Subreddit questions Why did you name your username the way it is?
Its the first two letters of my initials and a bunch of underscores…or is it... Some say that if you fill in the underscores it will reveal my true identity

Favorite part of the subreddit?
The community ofc! I love how nice everyone is and how supportive people can be when needed. I am extremely humbled by you guys for getting voted most helpful user and I never would have expected the amazing support that I have gotten for the short time I have been here!

How often are you on the subreddit?
I usually spend about an hour a day censoring Maka browsing the content and reading comments. I love finding new art so I like to flood the sub before I go to bed so that some people can wake up to some amazing art from our community!

What do you use to access the subreddit? Sync Pro is my main driver, it has some great moderation shortcuts and makes it super easy to view art from 3rd party sites.

Who are your favorite users? Are you friends with some of them? I think it's fair that my favorite users are u/phoenixversion1 u/Aulus79 u/Nerdman01 u/kotsthepro u/RogueryNight u/650_dollars u/BlackoutAviation
u/TheCoralineJones u/StarcoXTrullor u/Judacris u/Dakotalana u/AyJTee u/PoetryAreWe u/_ciphered_
u/DecidusRaiken u/GinsuFe u/Anonim97

Favorite fanartist?
That's a really tough one. I am constantly finding new artists that have their own style and are able to contribute some amazing pieces to the fandom but I have to say I am really a fan of gabychii’s style!

Do you read fanfiction? Absolutely! I am currently reading A Habit Hard to Break by u/Starco420. I would whole heartily recommend anyone read it!

What would you like to see in the sub?
Well seeing as we are currently in Hiatus I would love to see more community activities such as game night and watch parties!

How long have you been with the sub?
Roughly since the start of this hiatus ;-;

What made you join the sub?
Finishing the show and being interested in the community around it

What do you want to be known for in this sub?
Making helpful bots for all the wonderful users of our little sub!

SVTFOE questions How’d you find out about the show?
I was watching TV and randomly flipped to the channel it was on and I was instantly hooked.

Why do you like the show and what keeps you watching it?
I like how at times it can be a simple cartoon but at other times it can have very deep character development moments.

Favorite characters?

Favorite episodes?
“The Battle for Mewni", "Scent of a Hoodie", "Just Friends" (cause feels), "Running with Scissors" (cause older Marco was cool and kinda glossed over imo)

On a scale of 1 to 10, what is your opinion on the show?
I used to be at like a 9 but recently I think its fallen a little to about a 7.

Favorite moments?
Starco moments duh.

If there was ONE thing you could change about the show, what would it be? (something NON-shipping related)
Jana needs to come to Mewni, and Star needs to stop running from her problems

Which crew member(s) behind the show would you like to meet and what would you have them do?
Honestly, don't know much about the cast/crew besides Darron :/

What SVTFOE merchandise would you love to see?
tarot cards

If you somehow got the wand, what spell would you use?
Probably one similar to the Bedroom expanse one but with a Tardis-like effect rather than just poofing an expansion onto the side of the house lol.

Alright, even though people will often know your ship, what is your otp?
Starco is cool and all but Tomkie would be interesting and all the art I've seen has kinda solidified my position on that.

Misc questions Now for the rest of the questions. If you could remove one thing from existence, what would it be?

Favorite book(s)?
Currently reading Hard luck hank, but I don't read enough to have a favorite

Favorite movie(s)?
Interstellar, Ghibli Films, The Godfather, Your Name, Batman Dark Knight, Batman Returns, Kingsman, Only The Brave, Incredibles 1 & 2

Favorite tv shows (other than SVTFOE)?
Breaking Bad

Favorite songs/soundtracks and favorite composers/bands?
My favorite composer has to be Hanz Zimmer

Favorite video games? Classic Pokemon, Smash Mele, Red Dead 1 & 2, Black Ops 1, Modern Warfare 2

Favorite actors/actresses? (you can also include voice actors)
Sadly I don’t really keep up with actors/actresses :/

If you could bring back one inactive user, who would it be? (under the assumption they would want to come back)
Meep bby, come home. We love you <3

First videogame you’ve ever played?
Pokemon Emerald

Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle?
Charmander is always a safe bet but I am more of a Mudkip kind of guy.

Who is your waifu?
Meep ofc

How do you feel about goats?
They’re the best thing since Alpha’s biennium journals!

Now for something slightly more specific, you’ve bee-booped up some incredible bots. What one has brought you the most joy?
Well to be fair. I love all my bot babies and have done some serious work to make them all work under one driver so technically they're all one massive bot BUT if I had to pick one it would be Peribot. Even though he's made some mistakes I'll always love him

Another one in the bag! Special thanks to J_C for doing this!

How it feels to lose a whole Bitcoin.

Today I have finally accepted, that due to my stupidity, I have lost 1 BTC. I want to share this with you all.

How I learned about Bitcoin

In early 2013 is when I first learned of Bitcoin. I remember sitting in my barracks room, debating whether or not buy a coin. Didn't really know to much about what Bitcoin was, but it sounded promising. I remember the cost of once coin being roughly $75. "Wow, that's a lot to spend on something I will never be able to touch. I think I'll pass."
As time went on, I would see Bitcoin in the news, or discussed on Reddit, but didn't give it a second thought, until this summer.

How I started Bitcoin

I was on Reddit when someone mentioned the dark net market Alpha Bay. The dark net and Tor browsing and cryptocurrency sparked my interest as I tried to learn as much as I could. I had just gotten out of the Marine Corps and was working at a Boy Scout Camp, trying to absorb as much information as I could using only my slow data speeds.
Around August, I bought some coin. Not a lot, maybe .001BTC. Looking back now, I was addicted to it. I loved watching it go up. I even loved watching it go down. It was new and it was fascinating. I posted in this subreddit a few times, asking questions and learning.
Purchasing on coinbase, I would then transfer the BTC I had acquired to an Electrum Wallet on my laptop. Wanting to help the network, I downloaded Bitcoin Core unto my desktop, spend the weeks letting the block chain sync, and this is where I made my error.
Once Bitcoin Core had synced, I set my wallet encryption up. I didn't want to use anything I had used before, so I used essentially a song (I didn't but I'm using this as an example). I made my passphrase "somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me" and began consolidating my BTC into this wallet.
One day, I decide that this passphrase is too long for me, and changed it to essentially "sotmtwisrm".
On Thursday November 23rd, 2017, Thanksgiving, I made my final $1,500 purchase that finally got me to 1.03 BTC and transferred it to my Bitcoin Core.
I now owned a whole Bitcoin. I spent roughly $5,500 to own it, and it was worth $8,000. I was ecstatic.
Late that night, I decided that I didn't trust my computer. I would buy a Ledger Nano S. Went to their website and said to myself "Sweet. I can buy this using my Coin!"
If you would have asked me if I knew my password, I would have said "Yes. 100% I know it. I would bet a whole coin on it!" and in a way, I did bet a whole coin. My whole Bitcoin.
But Bitcoin Core, told me otherwise. And I panicked. I typed, and retyped, and tried everything I could. But the wallet, was staying shut.
I went to my safe, opened it up and pulled out the index card that said "Bitcoin Core" on it. I had put it next to the other information for my girlfriend, in case something happens to me.
The card was blank. I never wrote it down. I lost, a whole Bitcoin.

How do I feel?

I feel like a part of me has been ripped out.No one takes losing $6,000 lightly. I tell myself that money is just money, but it still hurts. I didn't sleep at all that night. I was stupid. While in the Corps, I saved my money and lived my life frugally, I saved up a good nest egg for now, while I attend college, and I pissed a good chunk of it away in a few weeks.
I have contacted davebitcoin with www.walletrecoveryservices.com in an attempt to get it back, so hopefully he'll be able to help me. I have also been attempting to Brute Force on my own desktop with what I know, but am not putting much faith in it. I have written it off.

Moral of the story

Please. For the love of all that is holy, write your passphrase and passwords down. Multiple locations. Backup your wallet. It's your wallet, its your money, it's your Bitcoin. YOU are the bank! Secure yourself, before you wreck yourself.

"Be the moon you want to see in the world."

Be the moon you want to see in the world! - Shibetoshi Nakamoto

In HBO’s Game of Thrones and the A Song of Ice and Fire books on which it is based, there is a character who wants to be king during the long running “War of the Five Kings” and its fallout. He should be king by right! He is good. He is very capable. He is the best thing going really, in terms of what’s there to serve this extraordinary purpose. But in the story--throughout his history really--in spite of his applied extraordinariness he keeps getting screwed over, really by equal parts happenstance and treachery. Ringing any bells from our own Dogecoin history?
You can’t keep a good man (or woman or shibe) down however, so he keeps trying and trying to be what he should be by all rights. He struggles extraordinarily but the problems just keep coming at an equal tempo. After seeing him go through this for quite a while, a loyal advisor pulls him aside and tells him:
You don't get recognized as the king by acting as if you should be king, you get recognized as the king when you act like the king. When you do the things a king does, you will be king.
That’s what I am here about today. To offer Dogecoin that same message about being what it wants to be.
Dogecoin is still very big. We are the third largest crypto behind Bitcoin and Ethereum as it is. At the time of writing, over the previous two days I have seen multiple tip bots spring up. I have also seen multiple channels about doge open on new communication platforms. The value has jumped by 26% in 24hrs.
But the “spread” is much wider now. This state is a more difficult state. But it is also stronger. We are in the US on Telegram and Slack and Reddit and IRC and Twitter and in the crypto forums. We are in China. We are in Russia. We are in Germany. All over the place and in those places we communicate in different forms.
Some think and have said that we are on the ropes because the price is [was] down or activity has fallen in the subreddit which is in turn is caused by some technical shortcoming or by design. I am not saying such things are not every bit as important as implied, but those are not the reason that we are where we are.
Once, every day--day in day out, we were making the impossible possible: NASCAR, Olympics, charities--I don’t need to spell it all out because I am sure it is just as burned into your brain as it is into mine. The mad pace of the sheer impossibility of it all! If we saw something amazing in the morning and we made it to evening without something else we were unimpressed.
Everyday an article would come out in Wired or Ars or somewhere big with some tech or life writer gushing about Dogecoin and the incredible things we were doing and our unique attitude and intensely positive disposition and generosity that extended to a fault--a fault that we knew was actually a strength. In turn everyday there was an influx of new, amazing people who shared our fundamental nature, our priorities and values. People new to doge, new to crypto--even new the the internet through outreach efforts to isolated communities! To be what we were, to be more than we were, we have to go back to that place. Let’s do some amazing things. By our amazing things, they will recognize our amazing nature.
This will take reckless confidence and hard work, vision and creativity, all that stuff. But if you think it can’t and won’t happen, you are wrong. I am still out there, and you are still out there. They are all still out there. And now? We all know now that it can be done. Right now you and I can do it. Because we have proved we are capable of having done so.
I argue this time will actually be easier. Dogecoin now is a pile of tinder--ideas, people, and technology--waiting for a spark. And you hold a match in this moment. Strike it and in a snap make it all real.
Counting all the people that have an interest in or actively support dogecoin but are “estranged” now while we aren’t our truest self, we have an unparalleled group of developers and artists and public relations people and writers and visionaries and crypto folks and just generally people who can and do get things done. You are these people and you know these people. So first, understand yourself that dogecoin is back. Then start right now getting the band back together.
Right now, you can open Dogecoin core and instantly make the network stronger--well, almost instantly (if you have 2GB of RAM to spare on your machine run it from the command prompt with “dogecoin-qt.exe -dbcache=2000” and sync much faster). Make a new post or comment, here or somewhere else. Do a photoshop you have long considered. Float an idea for a project. Fill in some specifics for how a goal should be achieved. Tip in a novel place. Bring some shibes together to brainstorm. Vote on a post so that more will see it.
Don’t do these things because you have to, but because you are a part of a newly resurgent and thriving Dogecoin that brings you the same joy it used to. Any seemingly mundane action of this kind can be the flap of a butterfly’s wings starting the chain reaction that takes us where we want to go. We won’t know this as it is happening. We will just notice the signs of movement as we are on our way. But never forget that our destination is not the soil of Earth’s moon, not really.
“The Moon” is wherever we are all together as our best selves. That is the sight that is truly the most wow (I have seen pictures and video of the lunar surface and it's really nothing next to something that makes Comic Sans pleasant). Dogecoin’s Moon is a collection of individuals being actively kind and unselfish, good-hearted and honest, productive and relentless, creative and funny, thoughtful and pragmatic, disruptive and confident. All in the best ways. I want to see that Moon rise again more than just about anything I can think of and it sits just below the horizon waiting on us to act.
Edit: Here is the same message typed up in an open to view Google Doc if anyone wants to share with some of those shibes I mentioned that don't Reddit. I don't know if it is worth translating for those many Chinese and Russian shibes out there but if you think so and you have a way to get it started please speak up.

Cold Storage Step-by-Step Guide

Link to all my other Bitcoin Guides
NOTE: If you decide this is too complicated for you; web wallets like coinbase have an offline storage option for bitcoins that is in all likelyhood probably a totally safe and viable option for general users. If you really can't understand this, I recommend simply using their cold storage option.
Here is my step-by-step guide on Bitcoin cold storage, or at least the method I use. I recommend starting by first reading my Cold Storage Concepts Guide as otherwise you may not understand some of these steps. What we’re doing is actually very simple and straightforward, but unfortunately looks a lot more complicated than it is.
This guide is for anyone who has a large amount of bitcoins and wants to store them securely for a large amount of time, instead of relying on third party wallets like blockchain.info or coinbase.com who might be compromised down the line at some point.
Note that I use OSX and other apple devices so unfortunately this guide is biased for those using apple… please don’t flame me. Alternatives exist for everything I list here for both Windows and Linux, just post if you get stuck I’m sure someone will help you.
There are many approaches you can take to cold storage, and the methods you use will depend on the level of paranoia you have and the degree of security you need, but this method will work for around 99% of people.
I welcome any and all feedback, and I encourage anyone intending to use this to read comments below to get second opinions.
  1. 5 normal 6-sided Dice (note: physical dice only! Do not use software!)
  2. A trustworthy electronic device capable of using bitaddress.org (I recommend using an non-jailbroken iPad or iPhone)
  3. Download a QR reader app
  4. A copy of the Diceware password generation list, either on paper or on a separate screen
  5. Pen/pencil and relatively strong paper.
  6. Disk Utility, or other software to create encrypted drives
  7. Dropbox account, Apple’s upcoming iCloud storage, or a relatively trustworthy long term network storage
  8. A physical long term storage location, preferably in or near your house.
Some notes on requirements:
We use 5 dice minimum as otherwise it will take you forever to generate passphrases, the better quality the dice and the more you have the quicker you can make passphrases.
I recommend using iPads or iPhones because to my knowledge they are more secure than android in terms of viruses/malware (someone in the comments will no doubt correct me on this though). Alternatively you can buy a cheap laptop and brand new hard drive.
On to generating the cold storage addresses! I’ve made extra notes at the bottom for more detail.
  1. Lock yourself in your room, gather your things and make sure no-one is going to disturb you.
  2. Get your dice and your diceware list. Roll 5 dice, look up the password and write it down. Repeat this at least 8 times to generate a passphrase for each cold storage address you want to make.
  3. Write these down on a piece of paper as clearly and neatly as you can.
  4. Take your iPad or other device and connect to the internet. Google ‘bitaddress’ and go to the top link (1).
  5. Once you have loaded the bitaddress website, disconnect from the internet.
  6. Click on the ‘brain wallet’ tab. (4)
  7. Carefully and checking it over three times, enter each of your 8 word or more diceware passphrases, and click ‘generate address’.
  8. Be careful that autocorrect didn’t change any of your diceware words
  9. Generate a further 4 or 5 word passphrase that will be used as your ‘Master Key’
  10. Take a screenshot of all of these addresses. On iOS devices this is easily done via the Home+Power buttons.
  11. Close the Bitaddress website on your device, purge your internet history, cookies, etc.
  12. On your laptop, disconnect from the internet and create an encrypted drive. Here’s how to do that in Disk Utility.
  13. Make sure this drive is password protected with your Master Key from step 8.
  14. Transfer screenshots of all of your cold storage addresses from your trusted device to the encrypted drive.
  15. Triple check this worked, then delete all screenshots from your trusted device.
  16. Use a QR reader to scan the PUBLIC addresses of all your cold storage addresses. Save these in your notes or email them to yourself (2)
  17. Unmount the encrypted drive. Take this drive and put it on your dropbox folder or other network hard drive.
  18. Reconnect to the internet on your computer and sync with dropbox or other service.
  19. Take your piece of paper with your diceware passphrases on it and store it somewhere securely (3)
  20. Go to your active bitcoin wallet, and send your bitcoins to cold storage. Congratulations, they are now secure.
Now a few things about what we did. We saved 2 copies of our cold storage private keys (the piece of paper, and the encrypted drive); this means if your whole house burns down then you still have a copy of your private keys in the cloud. If you forget your master key password, then you still have a physical copy in your house as a backup. We encrypted the drive so that anyone who gains access to your dropbox won’t be able to open it. You could even keep several copies of this encrypted drive spread over several locations and computers and it will still be safe. If anyone somehow finds your piece of paper, they will only see a list of random words and won’t necessarily know what it’s for (unless you leave detailed instructions or the word ‘bitcoin’ on it..!).
You also used diceware so your passphrases are completely random so no-one can guess them, and in fact are almost as strong as the cryptography in Bitcoin itself. Also, it was easier to write down 8 english words than a random sequence of 1-6's so there's less of a chance you wrote down your passphrases incorrectly.
To get your bitcoins out of cold storage, just scan the private key into your hot wallet, or re-generate the private keys from the diceware phrases you wrote down.
(1) this prevents you from mis-typing the address and getting a phishing page.
(2) We use a QR reader because this prevents writing the public keys down incorrectly.
(3) i.e. a safe, or inside a book in your library, on the back of a family picture that doesn’t get moved much. Spend some time thinking about how you want to approach this.
(4) You may have heard brain wallets aren't safe... this is not true. Only a non random brainwallet is unsafe (like one made from song lyrics), but since we generated our passphrases with dice they are random and the brainwallet is secure.

Questions Answers
I will preface that I make no apologies for the lack of political correctness of this question I ask... Is there a tacit quota on how many black girls you hire? Fact is I know you need a couple of black girls in the mix for the sake of variety but you hire too much and your club will be considered "the black strip club"? Or, do you hire as many as you want and just space out their shifts so too many are not on the floor at the same time? There is an unwritten rule that is followed. Once a club goes black you can never get it back. We play a lot of rock and techno type music and keep just a few black girls to keep this from happening. What's funny is that the black girls we have don't like it when we hire other black girls and the black guys that come in to our club are typically middle to upper class and would never step foot in a "black club"
the reason they (the black strippers) don't like when you hire other black strippers is because they are afraid that there "spot" is in danger...this is exactly like black pro wrestlers in the 70's who didn't like new black wrestlers in the territory Not so much their spot as their money. In a white club the black girl gets the black girl money but if there are more then one on the floor the few guys who like black girls then split that money between them and its a competition. Its hilarious when you hear them say that they dont like ghetto ass black girls when they themselves are exactly that.
As a former dj. yeah, you got it exactly. the mid range clubs in D/FW area generally did 8-1 w-b girls. there are, or used to be all black clubs, but they generally looked like stereotypes from a bad movie. Bullet holes in the front door, blood stains on the carpet, metal detectors at the entrance. Yea, this looks like a great place to have a few drinks and let my guard down!
How often do you get laid on the job? Never, I bat them away almost daily. Two days ago a very attractive dancer told me that she masturbates while thinking of me and although not easy turned her down. There are girls who when in trouble will grab my cock, bat their eyes, push their tongue into their cheek and Say "but I don't have to be in trouble do I?“ this is a career ender. Managers who stand the test of time do not screw their dancers... Bartenders rarely, but never a dancer. A whole slew of trouble comes from screwing a dancer, they tell everyone, you loose respect, and they expect special treatment. They no longer work for you, you work for them. Simply put, to answer your question, Never. My girl at home is way better looking then most of the girls and doesnt have any of the issues.
I'm reading all your answers with Kenny Powers' voice in my head. Favorite comment so far. You deserve gold, just not from me.
How does your girlfriend feel about you working in this kind of environment and anti social hours? She is ok with the enviroment because she knows I'm a good person but the hours drive her banans and puts a strain on our relationship. This is why so many managers date bartenders. Because they share the same hours and get to see eacother enough.
Does this get you any respect? I can imagine there is a whole slew of different types of women at a place like that, but has anyone (not the girls that try it) ever told you that they respected you for not giving in to this? Or is it just anger for not letting them get away with stuff? I have had three different reactions. There are the girls who were once sweet as could be, would help me with small tasks etc but then completely wrote me off and acted like complete bitches when I shut them down. I have had the girls who are ashamed and embarrassed and then there are the girls who feel appreciated and valued as a person rather then a sex object. From then on They treat you like their father or big brother and are the best dancers you will ever have.
So how many bartenders have you screwed? No comment, If your going to be with a bartender you better be ready to have a relationship and even then shit may get weird working together. It's best to just date outside of your club. It doesnt hurt to go to other clubs where the girls know who you are because then the limitations are lifted but you still have a name for yourself which makes it easy.
Ahh...your girl is reading this, isn't she? She is completely unaware and thinks Reddit is nothing more then the funnies I've shown her on the front page. Lol.
> She is completely unaware and thinks Reddit is nothing more then the funnies I've shown her on the front page. Lol.
What about the owner? He was Black Mailed once so I think he learned his lesson. If your going to screw a bunch of strippers be prepared to be lonley but have meaningless sex all the time. We get old and want more even as men.
How much money does the club make? How much do the dancers make? How much do you make? Is it difficult to open up a strip club? My club generates an income in the Millions every year. Personally I take home between 68 and 73k a year depending on how well the club does. I have a few smart and focused dancers who make over 100k annually but most of my dancers don't make over 40.
How did you get into this job? When your were young did you ever think you would ever work as a strip club manager or something similar? And do you have any funny/creppy story to tell? I never imagined that I would be managing a strip club I always pictured myself doing something in the medical field however like most people I just kind of fell into the business. After the Army, While in college, I worked for a typical night club doing security part time. The club was closing and the owner was a decent guy and tried to help everyone get a new job. Around this time the owner of several strip clubs in my area called him and asked if he knew anyone that was primed for management. He said that he would send anyone he knew his way and this is where I came in. I was told to lie my way into the job and was more then welcome to use his name as a reference. Mentioning his name got me the interview. The day of the interview I was sat at a large round table with 4 older and very well dressed candidates. After waiting for what seemed like an hour the GM of several clubs stepped through the double doors across the room holding a steaming cup of coffee and a cigarette. He confidently walked over to his chair, put his coffee on the table, his cigarette in the ash tray and then leaned over to me seated directly to his left, exhaled a lung full of smoke into my face and shook my hand. Everyone stood up and reached across the table to shake his hand except the man directly across the table who couldn't reach and had to walk around. He interviewed us all in a group setting going through our resumes one by one probing us on our qualifications. It was more then obvious that I was the least experienced person in the room that day and was certain I would not be getting a job. Towards the end of the interview the GM got very serious and said that in order to be considered for the position we would all have to submit a Urine Sample. He looked everyone in the eye seemingly simultaneously and said "does anyone have a problem with that?" everyone responded at the same time with different forms of no. Nobody had an issue with it and after a few awkward seconds of silence he let out a loud bellowing laugh and said that there wouldn't be any drug test today. I was laughing right along with him, reached out grabbed his coffee mug, stood up and loudly said "Are you sure because I'll give you a urine sample right now, no problem! He laughed some more and with a cigarette between his index and middle finger pointed at me and said. "First day on the job and you're already making jokes about pissing in the bosses coffee. I like you, I havd just the club for you. show up to (smallest club they had) on Monday, you'll be training with Chris. I looked at the other guys and smiled looked back at the boss, shook his hand and walked out before anything about that moment could change, and that's how I got my start.
Did you ever have sex with one of the girls who worked there? If so how did it go? And tell us some crazy stories that happened in the stripclub :) When I first started in the industry I made the mistake of sleeping with two new fresh out of the box 18 year old first day strippers. It went on for a few months and was Amazing! The rumors started circling and I got nervous. I lost a lot of respect and almost lost my job. Never Again. I want to take these girls up on their offers all the time so it's not easy, especialy when they throw themselves at me. Luckily my needs are well taken care of at home.
They come in boxes? Yes, Delivered by U.P.S Wait For it...
That had to have been great. Two 18 year old's learning to get their nasty on...those memories will serve you well in your middle age... Or if i ever go to prison.
What's the weirdest/funniest/least relevant song that's been played while a girl's dancing? My friend told me he heard Let the Bodies Hit the Floor the first time he went. Peanut Butter Jelly Time. Lol, She put her hands on her hips and just gleamed over towards my DJ... He started fist pumping and she cracked up and just went with it. It was a slow Monday and someone paid him too do it. The customers were smiling and laughing so I just let it ride.
I will pay you in bitcoin to get a video of something like this Oh, it can be done. Couple questions... What kind of guarantee do I have you'll actually pay? What song do you want to hear? And what kind of women do you like?
Whats the weirdest request asked of a worker? I'm not sure. Nothing comes to mind. A dancer once came to me in a panic telling me her bag of cocaine was stolen and asked if I would help her find it. I was stunned and just looked at her waiting for her brain to click in and realize who she just asked to help her find her drugs. It never did.
I'm assuming she was fired? Suspended to day shift for a week and we had a long talk. A strip club without strippers is a lonely old bar. We tolerate a lot of nonsense.
Do you ever try to push them in the direction of getting some help for their addictions? Keep a local AA/NA meeting list on hand? A strip club with strung-out or OD'ing strippers is a sad old bar. Noone knows because I send them home if they are messed up. My DJ, security, or myself usually catch it before a customer sees. I don't try to help these girls get off drugs. You'll regret giving a damn everytime.
This comment makes me really sad. One of my friends just started working at a club earlier this year. I have plenty of good girls who dont drink, smoke, or do drugs. They make the most money and typically save their money to open their own business or go to school.
How do you pick the girls? They apply, and if they are good looking enough their first night is their audition... No girl is an employee, they are all independent contractors.
Mmmm, the sweet sound of no vicarious liability... Thats right!
Interesting... Do you assign them shifts or supervise them when they are on the job? If so, then to what extent. Nope, Be here before 7 and there is no fee to work, Every hour after 7 the fee goes higher and higher and higher. Most girls are required 3 shifts a week except for the "Club Dimes" they pretty much do whatever the fuck they want.
Level with me now - Is there really no sex in the champagne room? Very rarely, and when it does happen it's always very awkward and uncomfortable looking because they're trying to hide it and have to contort themselves in awkward position. We have cameras in the VIP and champagne room and if it's being done either my vip security or dj know. some security and DJs will look in the other way for a nice tip. Personally I dont go looking for trouble and would have to stumble on it but if I did see it I would stop it immediately. Usually the girls just meet guys after work and are paid to hang out. They are just using the club as a way to get new clients. The majority of my girls do not take part in this and the ones who do I am typically aware of but at the same time don't care.
Does the cameras have microphones too or do you only check on the VIPs visually? The microphones only record if I press a number sequence on the alarm. This way if robbed and made to deactivate the alarm it goes into silent mode and a phone call is patched directly to the company where they can hear what is being said.
How many have died in your club? None, but some kid got shot in the parking lot a few years ago when he and his friend chased a guy all the way to his car. The guy grabbed his gun and opened fire hitting one of the kids in the gut. He grasped his belly and ran back into the club squirting globs of blood everywhere. It's all on camera and naturally we recieved a seizure warrant for the footage. Word of advice... Never commit a crime within 40 yards of a strip club unless you're wearing a mask and not driving your own car.
What is the easiest way to get a nut off after a night of drinking and going to the strip club as a last ditch effort? Drugs? Be charming? Act like I have $? Spend $ on dances? Or. Try to find the girl who turns tricks? Become a regular at the club, be generous, become known and liked by the girls. That's your best shot at some random drunk night last ditch effort fuck.
Is it true that the girls aren't paid, that the only way they make money is with the money guys throw on the stage and private dances? In my area yes, in other areas the girls make the minimum wage a waitress would. Which is irrelevant because if if it were my club I would just turn around and charge them their hourly wage right back so it would be a wash and on top of that fine them when they were late. Dancers pay to work, it's income for the club. Think of the club and security as pimps. We provide protection and a safe place to work they provide us with a percentage of what they make.
How do you know what they make? The clubs In my area the girls normally have some sort or purse they just stuff the 1$'s into. Yes, but their private dances (the real money) is tracked. Also, I have a close working relationship with the highest earners at my club and we have discussed their earnings.
I used to be a dancer at a pretty "swanky" club in Dallas. They charged me separate fees for everything! For the house mom, the DJ, and to dance that night. I was anxious about all of this until my "boss" informed me that no-penetration sex, aka bjs etc, are a-okay...and then I got really anxious,... *1. How many girls go through the dance license process that never come back after their first night? *4. Do you ever warn your girls that stripper clothes/shoes/dancing in general is VERY expensive to start up? Or is it fairly cheap in your area? *6. How do you pep talk curvy, or just generally un-confident girls? In my area there isn't a license required for dancers. Just the club. Anyone can try out. I do not warn girls about dancer gear. For about $200 you can buy two outfits and a pair of shoes in my area. I don't hire big girls, we have one and that's enough and she thinks she's a god damn ballerina. For the girls who are nervous I give them a partner which is always one of my kinder, sweeter, non drug addict dancers who will really help them through . I usually don't have to pep talk my curvy girls, they are always full of confidence. Rarely I have to push them to get more dances and then I just tease them about how their just there to party instead of make money or tell them daddy needs a new pair of shoes silly shit like that.
*3. What are the fees you charge your dancers for the amenities? Fees depend on what time the girls show for their shift the later the more expensive so it's tough to to be specific.
*5. How many girls have gotten in fights with CUSTOMERS and lost their right to work at your venue over the years because of it? I've fired several girls for fighting customer but the girls I have now know to tell me what happened and then walk away because I'll handle it.
Ive always wondered why strip clubs arent more active on social networking sites. I would love it if local clubs were more active on instagram/twitter and the like. Im sure there are plenty of times I would drop everything I was doing and drive right out because I saw "Dupree" was wearing X or because girls x, y, z are all working the same shift. I know alot of the girls dont want to show their face but that can easily be worked around. Is the thought that guys will just spank it to the pictures posted and not bother coming in?? a fear of showing the public what their product really looks like?? Or just reluctance from the girls to be pictured in any way?? I have every one of my dancers who have been there for a month or more as a FB friend and post a lineup everynight of each girl on shift and tag them in it. Every friend of the clubs FB and the girls FB is alerted. I started this when I took over my club. No other club in the area does this. Shhh. Great Idea BTW.
Are there any girls who don't want you to let their whole friends list know that they are adult dancers? I'm sure there are, they just block those people from seeing posts they're tagged in. There's a privacy setting for everything on Facebook.
I know its a job, and we all gotta earn money. But in alot of cases, girls working as dancers often do have some issues with themselves/something that has happended to them in the past. Do you never feel guilty sometimes? Or wish in anyway (if you know of a dancer with a horrible background) that you could help them out? Everyday, I keep reminding myself that it's not my fault, and if not for me they'd just work for someone else. After a few months in the industry you don't look at them the same. You see them lie, cheat, and steal and you loose some of that softness in your heart. Don't get me wrong I do have some good hearted girls that are excellent mothers and decent people these are the girl who make the most money but most dancers are sex robot junkie criminals who will rob their best friend.
Are you friend with some of the dancers or is it like, strictly professional and you wouldn't say "hi" if you saw them in the street or while shopping at the mall ? Edit : wrong word. It can sometimes be awkward seeing them on the street, especially when it's Walmart, they're with a customer and he's buying them hundreds of dollars worth of groceries. Or your at the mall with your girlfriend and daughter and your eyes lock. They act like they never saw you and slink away. But, like always, there are acceptions. There are a few who my girlfriend is very friendly with however we never hang out unless we happen to bump into each other while out. What's really strange is when you bump into a guy who's been in your club and with his wife standing right next to him insists that he knows you from somewhere but doesn't know where and no matter how many times you tell him you don't know him and just have one of those faces he keeps insisting. It's always funny to see the moment when they realize why they know you come across their face in a panic when finally they sheepishly agree with you and walk off.
I get not saying hi when a girl is wit a costumer, off course.. but when you're with your girlfriend / daughter ? What's the big deal ? Why not say a quick hi ? Its not an issue for me. It's usually the girl who makes it weird.
Do you have to pay off either police or local criminal organizations to avoid harassment? I am unsure about the police, But we are very close with the largest local biker gang in the city and are protected from organized crime.
Whoa can you add more to this? They stop in on busy nights to check on us and have put the word out that we are under their protection. Only a nobody who doesn't know anyone would try to rob us simply because he has no clue what he's getting into. If someone came in shooting the place up that person would most definitely disappear. You have to understand that these guys are not bad people. They are our police when the police cannot be.
How are they compensated? That's above my pay grade and thankfully I have no idea. Somethings are better to not know.
How did arrangement come to be? Truthfully I cannot discuss it without giving away too much detail and put myself in a situation where I may no longer be anonymous.
It's the warlocks isn't it? They protected a club I worked for in FL. I will not provide any insight into this subject matter for reason of self preservation. But thanks for posting!
What are your thoughts on the Easton Byfield case? He's the strip club bouncer who kidnapped, beat and robbed a patron in the bathroom while another employee video taped it. He's a punk and I hope he gets mouth fucked in prison. I hope that's clear enough.
Do you utilize your pimp hand or is there a more effective method? Hurt these girls $ and they straighten right up. Put them on day shift for a week or take away a weekend and they are angels for at least a week or two. They may run to another club for the weekend but they're uncomfortable and want to come back home.
Is the owner a gangster like Toni Soprano or the 1% MC gang in the area? How do you get along with the neighbors, LE etc? Our owner is an intelligent mid 40's playboy. You'd never think twice if you saw him on the street. Our closest neighbors is another club and we get along well enough.
What's your hours like? And how often per week etc. Officially... Tuesday - Saturday 7pm-3am but it's not uncommon for me to come in a few hours early or few hours late. I'm the GM and little extra stuff is normal. I probably put in 45-50 hours a week which is nothing compared to my last job and I make substantially more $.
Answer if you'd like... You say substantially more? Are we talking money I can live off of and have walking around cash, or just getting by? I've always wondered what the average income of strippers and club GM's was. Obviously they make rent or no one would do it, but nonetheless. Around 70k a year the person I replaced moved to the next bigger club in our chain and does 110 - 120.
Do you ever rent out the place to private parties? I could imagine those kinds of arrangements making hours longeshorter. No Private parties. We have regular customers and that would not be fair to them. We will set aside a portion of the club with plush leather couches and a private stage though!
How often do people "make it rain"? All the time. Usually these are the guys who want to look a certain way at the club. Typically the guys who spend the most do not tip much on stage and dont need to make a spectical of themselves but rather spend their money quietly in the back.
Do you require your girls be open to going private with both genders? While men bring most of the money, some women can too no? No requirments but these girls could care less if its a man, a women, or a cross dressing pirate handing them money.
What is the policy of girls working on their time of the month? LOL, They all sync up and one week out of the month you have 40 emotion basket cases all bleeding at the same time. We would have like three or four new girls for that week if we didnt let them work. You do know that womens menstration periods sync up when they spend a lot of time around one another right?
Wow, I guess none of them are on hormonal birth control (like the Pill) then. If you are on the Pill, your period always comes during the 4th week of the pack, regardless of who you are spending time around. If they work during their periods, are there ever any, um, accidents? Also, what girls tend to make the most money - are looks the only factor? I am sure some of them are... All I know is that one week a month I have girl after girl asking for Tampons. I have had a customer upset because he was bled on and the girl was mortified. He obviously did not pay. The biggest earners in the club are the girls with the best hustle and personality. My best looking girl is an idiot and makes shit compared to most of the girls. She isn't fun to be around and just sits around waiting for guys to walk up to her.
How long do the girls last in the job? i guess the ones that make a lot tend to stay long period of time but what about average ones or ones below average? also what makes them "stand out" from other girls? the dance? looks? i figure most of the girls are above average in terms of looks... so do they have some sort of aura that attracts customers to become regulars? I have a core group of about 15 girls that wil be with me for years. the others constantly revolve around club to club escaping problem after problem being forgiven over and over again. Looks make a girl stand out but what makes a good dancer great is their personality and sex appeal its not all about looks. I have a knockout who is Nuttier then squirel shit and she doesn't make nearly as much as some of my much less attractive down to earth girls you can talk to. Trying to respond quickly forgive my grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
How much money should a guy bring to have a decent time without dropping cash in the back? If you wanted to you could come in, drink sparingly, tip slowley and have plenty of interaction with the girls on and off stage for around $50.
I worked in the strip club business in Vegas as the marketing director...we just did an all nude club that didn't serve any liquor until we got our license. Couldn't you do the same out there? Nude + Liquor is a no go here. But some places just attach a bar so you walk through a door and drink across the hall and then walk back across to see the girls.
Hmm funny. I used to live in Tampa and all the strip clubs there are Full Nude No Liquor. Mons Venus and Odyssey 2001 have been voted very high even in world wide rankings. As long as there is a seperation from the club to the bar they can have a "seperate bar" still attached to club where patrons can walk between the two "seperate businesses."
The one strip club in my town doesn't serve alcohol. I never really understood why. Does it have to do with limiting potential trouble makers/gropers? All nude clubs do not serve alchohol and I think the lawmakers thought naked women and alchohol meant trouble. I'm not sure what the explanation is behind this.
How pathetic are your regular clientele, really? Day shift clients... VERY Nightshift Clients are middle to upperclass and dont seem pathetic. Some of the younger guys seem lonely and just want someone to talk to. the older guys always seem happy and secure in life just big ole perverts wanting to play with girls half their age. My Club is a big party spot for younger people both men and women who just want to have a good time. only about half of my customers come for the strippers.
Do a lot of guys wear jogging pants? Only the smart ones! That and basketball shorts lol but mostly no.
What kind of start up capital do you need to open a strip club? Can it be done with a loan, or do banks avoid investing in a strip club? You need a lot of capitol to open a strip club. As far as bank investments I don't know. The first step is securing a building, liquor license and adult entertainment license zoned for your building. After obtaining these three things you can find investors bank or not.
As a member of the strip club business in vegas as a marketing director...i sometimes felt embarrassed of my job and often at my wifes family functions always veered away from discussing my job, even if I'm praised by friends as the luckiest man in the world... How does your family feel about this business, and do you feel the same when discussing the job? Yes, I hate it. No one says a word and when the men and women split all the guys get all hush hush and start asking me questions. Its very obvious when one of the women look over and I am the center of attention whats going on. My GF Hates it and so do I. I have considered taking a hefty pay cut. 30K+ just to not be in this field any longer.
Why not just lie about your job, and say it's whatever you did before you became a manager? I do, My GF on the other hand has to tell everyone.
Have you ever run across an American born stripper that was not bat shit crazy? Is there a different mindset or level of craziness between foreign and domestic strippers? I have never had an out of country stripper, just out of state and girls from up north are slick little gangsters. Every last one of them have a real "I'll cut your ass" attitude.
Any crazy stories of having to literally throw someone out for being an over-the-top asshole? Ever have to call the police? All the time and all the time. imagine it and it has happened.
One night, I had to deal with a problem. A girl and I headed for "VIP", mostly lap-dancing. Charge by the songs.. i counted up to 3 songs. But i ended up to leave early. But she lied to me. she said i went thou 5 songs. Had to call the manager, he went with her side and had to pay for the fake songs THEN he got the bouncer to kick me out. How would you deal with that? We have a VIP man who counts songs and dances. His word is gold with me. If that were to arrise The customer would have to appear sober and convincing enough for me to check cameras. 9 times out of ten I'm going with my VIP man.
How often do you hear about gross feminine issues? Too Often, WAY too often.
What's the wierdest you've heard? Guys paying a girl to allow him to go down on them... I don't get it and it truly disgusts me. Maybe it's because I know where it's been but that's just wierd and strange to me to want to stick your face in a strangers crotch and pay for it.

Questions Answers
Since the Little Inferno guys aren't here, do you have anything bad to say behind their backs? Rumor has it they are unavailable because they are busy eating babies.
On the Itchy & Scratchy CD-ROM, is there a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key? What the hell are you talking about? :)
Who decides what games go into each bundle? Manatees select them from idea balls.
Thomas Was Alone is sublime. Thanks for making a quality game. How do you guys feel about bitcoin? This is the first indie bundle that supports it. I'd love to see some numbers describing bitcoin payments. The Humble Double Fine Bundle was actually our first bundle to support it, which came out last month. It represents less than .1% of our sales for Humble Indie Bundle 8, which is pretty surprising for me. Bitcoin users do seem more generous than average though. I want to get some official stats for a blog post soon.
Will you be expanding the payment support in the future? A lot of Europeans (mostly Germany) do not have debit/credit cards, and instead elect to use PaySafeCards, and I'm sure we'd all be thankful for this. We have been looking into ways to accept PaySafeCard. I would definitely like to support it as well. It is by far our next most often requested payment method.
How do games get featured on Humble Bundle? Is it HB asking the devs or the other way round? In my case I found an email address and sent them a copy of Thomas.
They got a hold of me in 2011 a few months after Capsized's release. We were always wanting to be in a Humble Bundle, mostly for the exposure, but it took time to get the Linux/Mac ports ready. Which was worth the wait since we ended up in a particularly awesome bundle.
Yeah, they asked me. I was already using the Humble Store widget, so we already knew each other...
We'd been in touch with the Humble guys since just before Dear Esther Launched and they were fans of the game. We talked about getting DE onto a bundle, however, at the time there was the issue of how the hell we'd get Source running on Linux. The Bundle guys have some fantastic contacts with Linux "Port-masters" who've done an amazing job so far!
How hard has it been to port some of these games to Linux? Were some of them written for DirectX? If so, is it relatively straightforward to translate them to OpenGL? Also, I just wanted to say I really appreciate you making Linux ports. Thanks a lot. Making the port itself wasn't massively hard (i'm lucky in that I use Unity) but the differences in distros mean a lot more ongoing support than I was expecting.. I have a big list of fixes to get through for the odder systems out there :) Almost all of them (across all the bundles) were DirectX games to start with, and had to have OpenGL code written for them, SDL added in to handle input and window management, OpenAL for audio, etc. Capsized was relatively straightforward, but it wasn't really "easy". On top of adding several new features to MonoGame, I had to create 4+ new libraries to fully support the game (one of which was the MonoGame-SDL2 branch). It took a few months to get there, but now that the tech is done I can make XNA ports super fast now, rather than making an ass of myself trying to get OpenTK/MonoMac to "work". Proteus is C# and OpenGL/SDL. C# is fairly cross-platform thanks to Mono (open source implementation of Microsoft's .NET). First and biggest chunk of work was to get it working on Mac (Thanks Jon Brodsky!) and then Ethan worked some magic with joypad support, filing and dependency packages to get it running on Linux (he could probably elaborate)
Is the humble bundle profitable? Certainly is for porting contractors!
Yes :)
Definitely! Paid a good amount of rent, some money to invest in future projects and other things, all good.
What is the process like for choosing which games are in the "Pay more than the average" section? We choose the best games from the bundle!
Just kidding, it is pretty arbitrary. We basically just ask a developer if they would mind being in that slot and repeat until it is filled. Sometimes a developer will specifically request to be there. Sometimes it is actually hard to fill.
Does that game only get a share of the revenue from games that beat the average? By default, everyone shares evenly regardless of the position. However, if you expand the sliders, you can go in and customize which game gets what.
Out of all the games in the package, what are your personal favorites and why? (yes I am evil for asking.. but I do think there is a difference in making a game vs playing the games) I am a massive Hotline Miami fan. Which is odd, because I'm not a big fan of violent games generally, but that game feels so insanely bad ass.
Hotline Miami for me, it's pretty much a perfect action game, though I really love this bundle because of the diverse range of games. I am really jealous of games with a simple design like Hotline Miami that manage to engage me with so little - while I feel like my own game designs become a mess of features and additions. also the music is awesome.
Outside of the games I worked on, I'm really liking Thomas Was Alone. I just like games that tell an amusing story, I guess. Dear Esther is pretty great too. I still need to play Awesomenauts, trying to set up a gamenight with some of my friends.
I love Thomas Was Alone. Never played until I got it on Vita and was blown away by the presentation, pace, and voiceover. Odd things I know but they are majestic.
Maybe weirdly for me, but Hotline Miami totally sucked me in and spat me out at the end. I kinda love that Proteus is in a bundle with the most horribly violent game.
Breedlovin: Why Hotline Miami OST is not included in Humble Bundle? There are many different artists involved in the OST, a lot of which are selling their tracks on their own label or personal albums. The individual revenue for each of the artists would be very small and in the end it is better to support them directly.
Correct me if im wrong, but i think a lot of the artists have some of those songs out for free as well. Some do, yes. Off hand I know Jasper Byrne, Scattle, Perturbator, MOON, and Erik Suhrke are selling their tracks.
Robert, what was your biggest inspiration for Dear Esther? From an art point of view, I guess many things. I realised early on that I wanted to go for a style that took elements from impressionist painting, where you have this kind of line between detail and perceived detail (useful when dealing with the limitations of the Source engine at the time. I was also highly influenced by the careful attention to detail found in Andrei Tarkovsky's movies (Most notably Stalker). Both have ways of communicating so much through their imagery, not just in mood and atmosphere but also in an unspoken narrative which adds much depth to the story being told. I also loved the video game, Stalker, and more recently Metro 2033 which has been an influence in my work since day 1.
That's awesome - I really did get the same kind of desolate vibe from Dear Esther as I did from Stalker. And I've really got to hand it to you guys on the visuals department, too. Dear Esther is probably the nicest looking thing on the Source engine. What's your favorite of the Stalker games? The First, without a doubt. Once you got past the bugs it was a one of the best survival horror games I've ever played. The second kind of lost the whole desolate lonely atmosphere with all the faction stuff, and I just felt CoP was really unfocused.
Hotline Miami makes for an excellent drinking game. Everytime the player dies, everyone in the room drinks. Was your intention to murder me? Not intentional but a pleasant surprise, yes. :)
Financial issues aside what have been the most challenging aspects in creating a game? Polish.
It's hard, it can often be slow and boring, but it's so important in making your game stand out.
Getting Olivier to draw.
Motivation. It's hard to keep going for a 2+ year project, especially when you're not getting a lot of community interest or feedback.
From an indie point of view? For me the hardest part was the isolation. Working remotely with a team can have it's upsides, but it can also be a lonely existence. Syncing up with the team and knowing where everyone is at can be frustrating at times if people are working different schedules in different time zones. I think going to GDC in 2012 really made it hit home how much I missed being around other game devs.
Saying that, there nothing like a solid day of Game dev sitting in your pants whilst watching Start Trek TNG!
To any of the devs: have you considered open-sourcing your games at some point? I have seen some indication that this might happen with Proteus at some point, but what are your opinions on this? I was out of town until about half an hour ago, but this'll get fixed very shortly. Amazed we didn't catch this in QA.
I love you all for the brilliant Linux ports this time around. Although, you know, Thomas could use a bit of work, with it crashing when you press escape. :) I think I am too embarrassed about the Capsized code to open source it - I feel bad for every porter than touches it. I doubt someone would find any use in it. But for our new game Apotheon, I'll definitely be releasing it as open source one day, hopefully I can make the engine generic enough to be used for other projects.
It doesn't crash on the DRM-free version, were you testing the Steam version? Ahhh.. that's interesting, they are same code, so that's odd.. but useful info, thanks.
One for biffkins: Are you a Douglas Adams fan? That's what I got from Thomas. Totally. Most British nerds are.
It's also heavily influenced by Danny Wallace (the chap who narrates) writing. When he's not voicing over rated indie games, he's an awesome author. If you dig that mix of humour and heart, check out some of his stuff.
but haven't completely finished any Found your problem, bro.
Finishing games that you make is a great way to make games. Highly recommended.
Do you have any recommended tools or libraries? I know you (Ryan) use straight OpenGL a lot, but do you have any other recommendations? It seems next to impossible to find a complete solution. If you want a complete solution that's easy to use, get Unity. It's fucking awesome.
If you want bits and pieces, I gave a talk on this: Link to www.youtube.com
Hate to be that guy... Got an ETA on the Linux build? Working as fast as I can. The game is fully playable, just working out rendering glitches.
SVN or GIT? which do you prefer? (Mercurial.)
Git or Hg. In the way that I use them, it doesn't matter which, though I tend to pick Git if I have the choice since that's what I'm used to.
'copying it on to a USB every couple of days'.
I'm an idiot.
I literally have nightmares of git conflicts, so I am sticking with SVN.
SVN because it's never really let me down and I suck at learning new stuff. I can see the value in the distributed version control systems though, so maybe I'll branch out (hehe) someday.
U/Breedlovin , any details you can reveal about Hotline Miami 2? Nope.
What about a release date for Hotline Miami 1 on PSN? Late June or early July most likely.
For the Awesomenauts guys: Did you expect the game to do as well as it has? It seems like it has had a particularly long tail as far as sales. BONUS Q: Derpl + Voltar = Why? No we didn't expect it. Actually releasing the game on steam was pretty much an all or nothing deal, as we we close to being bankrupt. Awesomenauts doing this well was something we couldn't have hoped for.
How has being part of Humble Bundle changed the way you think about business and gaming? I have a lot more time to make the next game awesome.
It taught me that being visible is the most important thing to get a revenue.
I realized how motivating it is to have a large amount of players trying the game again.
Humble Bundle is an amazing example of what happens when people are given a choice on how they can contribute towards, or consume a product that they like and want to support. People don't WANT to pirate games, they just need choices. and I think it's old fashioned and sad that we still have big publishers and retailers going out of their way to just to say "Pay us $XXX to play or fuck off! (/Pirate)" The excuse that game development is expensive is also not a reason to make games less accessible or impose draconian DRM. Humble is a great example of what can happen when you take those restrictions away and put your trust back into the consumer.
It taught me not to be scared of DRM-free.
Fabinaab or Olivier, how did you guys come up with the name "Awesomenauts"? Originally the game was called "OMG Space". But we decided that name sucked and opted for "blastronauts". Then we found out about a game called "Max Blastronaut" and we had a meeting where we couldn't come up with anything good. When we walked away from that meeting one of us said "why can't we come up with something awesome" and that's how it came to be.
Flibibitjibibo, I understand it's the first time your SDL2# package is being used - can you tell us more about that? What is special about it? Why did you start working on it? And what does it mean for future game ports? Link to plus.google.com
Basically, SDL2# is what I wrote to get SDL2 access in my C# projects. Tao existed for SDL 1.2, but that's old and nobody seems to use Tao anyway, and OpenTK existed for OpenGL/OpenAL among other things, but OpenTK totally sucks at everything except for the GL/AL bindings (and even then, the naming scheme is pretty goofy IMO).
SDL2# and MonoGame-SDL2 mean that I can port an XNA game to Linux/Mac extremely quickly, instead of the several months it took to get Capsized to the level of quality that it's at now. "Compile once, play anywhere" is finally the reality that it should be with MG-SDL2.
@icculus: Every time someone mentions to me they want to get into game development and ask for tips or information, I always link them to your interview on FLOSS weekly many years ago. I feel to this day it is still the best interview for anyone looking to get into game development or application porting. In the interview, the topic of engine and client porting came up and you said (paraphrasing) "We will never see HL2 on Linux." What went through your mind when Valve announce they are porting their entire library to Linux? I already knew about Valve's plans before the announcement, so I guess I thought, "I hope I slept enough, because that's the end of sleeping from now on." Half-Life 2 on Linux is proof that Valve is serious, but it's Steam that's making game developers scramble for a Linux port now.
It's funny how things change, though, right? When I made that comment on FLOSS Weekly, id Software was shipping Linux binaries for Doom 3, and Epic let me push Linux changes into the same copy of the Unreal Engine source code they gave to licensees.
Now they're both like, "uh, we'll wait and see what happens first," while Valve is placing their bets.
Valve has come a long way. They're being ballsy and progressive about the whole Linux thing. And when Valve is ballsy and progressive, history shows that Valve prints money and gets to make all the rules.
But hey, waiting to see what happens seems like a sound strategy.
EDIT: one more thought: while I was literally in a taxi to the Moscone Center to hear about Apple switching from PowerPC processors to Intel CPUs, I was having an animated conversation on my cell phone with someone about how Apple would never ditch PowerPC under any circumstances. As you can see between this and the comment about Half-Life 2, I do not have a career in psychic prediction.
What's it like? S'alright.
It Burns!!
Not bad. Pretty warm. Needs more salt. A little bit big on me, but comfortable. Terrible cliffhanger ending.
What's your favourite food? Beer!
Pizza.. Thomas Was Alone was made primarily while eating pizza.
Nachos. Always nachos. Forever nachos.
While I was broke it was ASDA (Wallmart) 10p curry noodles and £1 Pizza, but after 3 years I can't really stomach either any more. I've now returned to my love of Thai food!
Is Scotch a food?
What is the hardest part of developing? Meeting your deadlines. We planned for a year, but it took us almost 4 years. ><
Lack of sleep, money and excess of noodle intake.
Keeping motivation for a project, and not just starting something new. Finishing and polishing is hard.
U/biffikins: You ported your game to Linux on your own (if I'm not mistaken) how was the experiance? Will you do it again (on a future game?)? Do you find supporting Linux financially viable? Cheers :D. I did. It was pretty straightforward, but there are a lot of distro related issues.
I'm sure I'll release on Linux again, but I will probably delay the release so that I can focus on it, as yeah, it's a challenge to make it work for everyone.
What tips would you give for marketing indie games? Be honest, be open, and be entertaining.
We will never have the ad budget of AAA, or even the latest movie tie in, but we also don't have the limitations on talking that those guys do. We can express our opinions, go off on tangents and speak directly to players.. Use that opportunity.
Illustrate what makes your game different and show that to the folks most likely to be interested. Seed your community of fans and grow from there. Then show EVERYONE.
Transparency and a good sense of humor are what I attribute to my success (in terms of marketing myself/my games). If you can call it that, I guess.
Of course, I'm not a game developer, just a porter. But those types of developers are the ones that I like the most.
What these guys said - be as open as you can and allow the community to get involved with your game's development early on. Having a good community of fans talking about your game is better than any marketing campaign
1 million dollars in 18 hours, amazing stuff. So guys, when will you all add Steam trading cards to your games? I just got the email from Valve yesterday I think, will try to get it in some time in next couple of weeks.
We really like it, hopefully soon!
Does it mean every dev is welcomed to implement the trading cards or are you a "lucky" one to be invited? Also, whoo, now I get to play TWA again ... are there any speed run records you know of, I could try to break? It looks like to me all devs are allowed to implement it.
In light of the recent fiasco with Paranautical Activity, how do each of you feel about Greenlight? I've yet to be in it.. but it seems like a better system than the one that preceded it (basically, sending an email and crossing your fingers for a few months).
Steam could really benefit from a more democratic method of selecting its games. Greenlight was never really the answer. That said, I have no idea what the right solution is.
At least there is greenlight! Indies now have a second chance that way to prove their games popularity. With Capsized Valve accepted us originally then rejected us a few months later (not sure if they actually tried it when they accepted us). This was in 2010, and so you were completely relying on just hoping for a email back from them. We kept sending them new builds and media stories about the game, and they eventually did accept us, but it was pretty nerve racking. At least with greenlight you see some progress and can measure success, rather than just hoping for a email back.
It's a tough spot for sure but I do think placement on a digital game distribution storefront, including Steam, is not a basic human right and some form of curation is important. That said, not sure what the right answer is - smarter people than me are working on that hopefully.
I'm pretty sad about Greenlight. At least, it's bad that it's touted as the only way to get on the biggest games portal there is. If they'd kept greenlight plus the old curation system (journalist, critics etc could recommend stuff) that'd be less painful. It's sad to see games get easily enough "yes" votes to be profitable for the devs, yet still languish in limbo.
I agree that it's definitely a step-up from how things used to be, but of course there is still room for improvement. I would like to see the selection process made a bit more open.
How do I get to be an assistant warlock? Business school.
U/buffikins, How many people named Thomas have emailed you in terror? Many, many people. And they all rock. I also get sent a lot of photos of those coca cola bottles with names printed on them.
U/robertbriscoe, do you have any future projects planned like Dear Esther for the Source engine? I think I reached the limits of what I can do with Source, as for new projects, Dan has some cool stuff lined up and I'm currently fleshing out a few different game concepts that are focused more on the emotional experience of the player. It's the first time I've ever had to design a game from the ground up though so it's slow going.
Why Voltar is so smart? :l. Because his tank is filled with beer.
How many of you are part of the secret indie clique? ;) I was thrown out of the secret indie clique for talking about the secret indie clique. I also didn't fight on my first visit.
I was only let in after being paddled for three days and nights in a bizarre initiation ceremony. I couldn't see any faces and wasn't allowed to talk. To be honest it's a bit overrated.
Flibitijibibo: why the complicated name? :( For a while it ensured that nobody would ever have my handle used on a website/forum/etc. Of course, now that people have heard of me, that may not hold up so well. I dunno.
So uh, mostly out of convenience. For me, at least. It also sounds pretty neat. :P.
Unity is basically one-click to a Linux port (but you have to develop on Mac or Windows). Basically what Ryan said. 99% of my work these days is with MonoGame-SDL2, but I would never ever recommend it for making new games. XNA as a whole is a dead end; MonoGame is best used as a preservation tool, not as a new tool for game development. If you like C#, You can get SDL2/OpenGL/OpenAL access with SDL2#, which I made for Capsized/MonoGame-SDL2: Link to github.com And for Java, LWJGL. If you're making a Java game, you're not doing it right until you're using LWJGL. If it weren't for this library, I would not be programming at all right now. It's really, really good at what it does.
If you want lower level stuff: SDL 2.0, OpenGL and OpenAL. enet, physicsfs.
Obligatory talk here: Link to www.youtube.com.
If you had a time machine and could deliver a message to the younger version of yourselves that is just getting started working in Game-Making, what is one thing you'd tell yourself that you should have known or just needed to hear then? I'd tell myself to take up snowboarding and playing guitar. I started out with that way too late.
Get out of the AAA industry earlier! (well, maybe... certainly learned a lot from working at "proper" companies, but I could probably have started working on my own stuff way earlier)
Dont stress about launch day sales, or pre release press, or getting with a publisher, or pretty much anything but making a good game.
You'll be a crap animator and web designer and you will find it boring, go work in video games and you will be less crap!
Also, you will start going bald at 16! GL!
Stop playing Kid Icarus for damn second and start learning more about programming.
U/icculus and flibitijibibo, if a beginner-level aspiring game developer was to pick a set of development tools that would allow for the easiest cross-platform development, what would those tools be? Unity is basically one-click to a Linux port (but you have to develop on Mac or Windows).
If you want lower level stuff: SDL 2.0, OpenGL and OpenAL. enet, physicsfs.

How important do you think it is that learning to program and develop software is widely available in an educational format to our youth? For me, it's not so much teaching coding itself as inspiring kids to use computers to create.
Also, how can we get more people interested in developing not only games, but other software as well? When I was a kid, 'IT class' was basically a 'how to use MS Word' course. Not good enough. Fortunately my dad worked as a programmer so he was showing me how code worked at a really young age.
What are fundamental programming languages that beginners should focus on first? I don't know if one language in particular is 'better', but I'd say Unity or Game Maker are good welcoming places. For kids who want to make games quicker, platforms like Twine can get you doing sophisticated stuff in a very short space of time. Awesome.
Hey Mike Bithell did you work on your southern Han Solo again? You should really get in on another superstream for a reading of Star Wars Episode 5. I am there.. the second I'm invited :) It is scary how much I'm recognised for that stream now.
Hassle JSmith and Northernlion, and let's get this happening :)
Favorite Indie Game ever? Minecraft.
Does dayZ count?
Currently Anodyne. It always changes, as my memory's horrible, but Anodyne's the first game to come to mind and nothing's making me go "oh yeah, but that game..."
EDIT: Fez is up there too. All these bundle games keep pushing other good games out of my memory, and I'm working on that game!
Super hexagon.
Limbo is up there for me. Played through once and never again because I had the perfect experience.
Braid and LIMBO compete for the top spot.
Question for robertbriscoe: Do you think that Dear Esther is a story that could only be told as a video game? Does the story transcend the medium or does the medium transcend the story? Dear Esther is an experience that could not exist in any other medium. The whole idea was born from experimenting with First-Person games and pushing on the traditional boundaries of that the game space. With Dear Esther we tried to see how much we could break these boundaries and find out what kind of experience would be left over.
Same question for biffikins about Thomas Was Alone. I love both games and I can't wait to see what you guys do next! The story is the game and vice versa, I think they are one entity really.
If you have to choose between Steam model and DRM Free, which one and why? Steam. It's an excellent platform to get visibility as a small developer. Also being able to take part in Steam sales gets you $.
Steam, it's an amazing platform for reaching gamers, and I think it's a testament that, although we've been selling Dear Esther through many different outlets, Steam (until the bundle at least!) accounted for 99.9% of our sales!
Anyone: if any of your games were 'reality', what would it be like? What part would you play? I think it's probably best if you aren't any of the characters in Dear Esther in real life. :)
But we are probably all of them at various points in our lives...
Let's see, Dear Esther...Kidney Stones, a broken, infected leg, failing eyesight, syphilis, guilt, death, loneliness and a polluted barren cold Hebridean island... i'd have to it'd be pretty shitty! I think i'd rather play the part of the seagull.
What upcoming games are you excited about? I couldn't be more hyped for Gunpoint.
Really interested in Apotheon, Alientrap's next game. While actually meeting Lee I got to play it a bit at PAX East, pretty neat stuff!
I've also been following Sean Hogan (Anodyne) on Twitter, excited to see what he's got in mind for his next game, as Anodyne is probably my favorite game this year (so far, at least).
To list Kickstarter projects: Distance, SoundSelf and Energy Hook.
Link to blendogames.com Link to www.youtube.com << Quadrilateral Cowboy, basically a puzzle game using ingame programming/scripting to finish puzzles. Every game from Blendo Games is amazing, so I am really looking forward to this.
Civilization V: Brave New World. I'm a sucker for all the civ games.
Do you think the game would have been different if you ate something else, let's say pancakes? If I'd had pancakes I think I'd have made Proteus.
The programming class at my highschool is a joke, so I won't be taking it next year. What would you recommend as methods or places to learn? If you think it's a joke, then you were probably not the target audience. High school programming classes are almost always for people that have no experience in programming, and almost no passion to learn it. It's not unlikely that someone with a little background knows more than the teacher in these classes...often they are taught by math teachers (nothing wrong with that, mind you), but they are usually not hackers, or someone that really even spent much time programming. Even if they are, they are going slowly to accommodate the students that would drown otherwise. It can be frustrating if you're ready to move faster, though.
I took a programming course once, and lost points on the final for using an "else if" construct. The teacher had never seen it before. Seriously, this shit happens.
The best thing you can do in this scenario is take AP Computer Science, if it's available, ace the test, and get the cheap college credit. And don't be a dick to the teacher. They already understand their limitations, and you probably don't understand yours as well as you think you do.
